Optimizing a jet airplane for optimal flight is the kind of engineering project that would require a computer simulation.
The result, however, is being done at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California.
JPL’s new “Optimization Systems Engineering” (OSE) project is one of the most ambitious and ambitious efforts in the aerospace industry to improve jet aircrafts flight characteristics.
“We’re doing this in partnership with the Air Force and the Navy to bring this technology to the forefront of aircraft design,” said NASA JPL Program Manager Mike Williams.
“Our primary objective is to increase efficiency and improve performance,” said JPL project leader Brian McLeod.
“A plane with a low takeoff weight and maximum speed is going to fly better and more efficiently than one with a high takeoff weight, a low speed, and a high lift output,” McLeod said.
“Optimizing a plane’s performance is going in two directions,” Williams said.
“First, the airplane is going into an optimum operating environment for its performance, and then the airplane has to fly into that environment, and that environment has to work for us.”
The goal of the OSE program is to design, build and fly a jet plane with the best efficiency possible.
It will be a project that involves both engineers and aircraft designers working together.
“What we’re doing here is building the software that controls this software and makes the software run optimally,” Williams explained.
“This is the software which we will build to make sure the jet is going the way we want it to be flown,” McLey said.
The software will include an optimising engine, fuel system, control system, and flight control systems.
“You’re going to have a flight computer and a flight control system,” Williams continued.
“It’s going to be a big computer that can do a lot of things.”
The first phase of the project will involve a computer program to simulate jet flight.
“The next step is to make that software available for the public,” Williams added.
“We want to make it available to the general public so they can go out and test and see how it flies.”
Once the software is up and running, it will be up to the jet pilots to use it to improve their performance.
“I’ve flown this airplane before,” said Marine Lt Col John Ahern, an Air Force pilot.
“And it has done a really good job of flying the plane,” Ahern said.
But this is the first time a pilot will be required to fly a plane to fly optimally.
“To me, it’s a really big deal.
It’s an incredible achievement.
It takes an airplane that has flown a lot and it can fly optimically,” Ahen said.NASA’s Jet Super Jet has a flight speed of Mach 3 and can reach speeds of more than Mach 20.
It is also one of several jets being developed at JPL for the US Air Force.
